SEP sesam Licensing Basics

The SEP sesam licensing is designed to allow a flexible configuration and use of all available base modules and extensions.

The SEP License Program consists of the following available SEP building blocks:

  • SEP Backup Server
  • SEP GUI
  • SEP Server Client
  • SEP Data Mover and Remote Device Server
  • Autoloader Support
  • Storagepool
  • Database and Groupware Online Modules
  • SEP Services (Upgrade, Support,...)

Depending on the requirements all available modules can be combined and a dedicated license to the environment is generated.

The base for the whole configuration is provided by a SEP sesam Server. Running on one of the available Operating systems. Please find the supported environments in  the SEP Wiki. 

1.) The SEP sesam Server consist of four building blocks

SEP Management Server

All Management- and Backup information is stored in a combination of a Database (SQL DB) and files on the filesystem. The SQL DB contains all necessary information which is provided via the SEP sesam GUI (graphical user interface). The access to the data directly in the Database is possible. Therewith individual reports based on the content of the database and SQL Selects can be created.Logfiles and listings are stored as ASCII files on the filesystem. This is the base of the catalog information and it creates the so called „media index“.At the SEP sesam Server the license file is stored. Clients do not have local informations. Backup jobs can be done encrypted. Also a backup via a Firewall infrastructure can be defined using the GUI.

GUI – Graphical User Interface GUI

The Java based User Interface can be installed in various numbers and on any available platform. Authorised access to the SEP sesam system is guaranteed by three different access profiles.Using the SEP Master GUI parallel, distributed and independent SEP sesam Servers can be managed within one GUI. The communication between the GUI and the SEP sesam Server is based on the RMI protocol. This allows SEP sesam to administer also remote locations with a low bandwidth connectivity. The SEP sesam Server can also be administered without any graphical user interface, based on command line tools.

SEP Server Client

Each SEP sesam Server contains one Backup Client, for the selfbackup and as Disaster Recovery prevention. No additional Client license for the backup server is necessary. For a recovery of a SEP sesam Server predefined tasks and procedures are provided. They can be enhanced to a disaster recovery strategy by the use of bootable recovery media.

SEP Data Mover

All connected drives (disc and tape) to the SEP sesam Server can be used for backup. The base license of the backup server contains the backup to a single tape drive and the Backup-To-DISK functionality. A list of the supported storage devices is available here.

The SEP Data Mover provides Backup to Disk as a virtual tape library. With this technology each available disk and storage space in a network can be used for the backup. The backup is equivalent to a backup to tape. All data is stored in so called Savesets (data container). All the Savesets are stored in a directory structure.

Data stored to disk can be migrated at any time to tape. This can be planned by the SEP Migration feature. A mixture of Backup-to-Disk and Backup-to-Tape is possible at any time and individual level. The access to the backupdrives is realised by the use of SCSI, FC or iSCSI.

2.) SEP sesam Client

Each system which provides data to be stored by the SEP sesam Server is called a Client. At the client the client software has to be installed to enable the communication with the SEP sesam Server. The defined data of the client will be backuped from the SEP sesam Server (push mechanism). Used backup and control ports within a Firewall infrastructure can be defined at the SEP sesam Backup Server.Each SEP sesam client can be enhanced by the use of additional SEP sesam Database, Groupware or VMware modules. The Operating system of the client is independent from the license and the backup server. It can be chosen from the list of supported Operating systems. 3.) Autolader Support

Within the license of SEP sesam the support of any tape drive is included. The licensing counts the total number of used Slots in an environment. The number of used tape libraries is irrelevant. With the available packages each number of actually used slots can be exactly licensed. For example, in a 48 SLOT Library only 12 SLOTs are used. In this case only 12 SLOTs have to be licensed. No additional licenses are required. The upgrade to further SLOTs is always possible.

4.) Storagepool

SEP sesam provides Backup-To-DISK capabilities. This module is designed as a Virtual Tape Library (VTL). The virtual library allows backup directly to attached Storage devices (DAS) or remote attached storage devices (NAS, SAN). Each storagepool can be distributed to different (Hardware) storage devices. This results in a very high flexibility. The licensing of SEP Storagepools is based on Terabyte and contains also the ability to migrate and duplicate the data from the Storagepool (Disk) to Tape – Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T). The restore of data from a storagepool is executed directly to the target client.

5.) Database and Groupware Online Modules

For a wide range of databases (Oracle, IBM; DB2, SAP-DB, MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL and more) SEP sesam provides Online Backup Modules. This allows backup of a database within a running system. No shutdown is necessary. The database modules use the defined interfaces and tools (API) of the respective database. All Database Online Modules are certified corresponding to the vendor requirements. Databases without existing SEP sesam Online Modules can be accessed and stored via the SEP sesam pre/post interfaces.SEP provides the widest range of Online Modules to backup Groupware and Collaboration Solutions (MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell Groupwise, Open-Xchange, Scalix, Zarafa). Within Linux based Groupware Solutions SEP offers outstanding functionality, like single mail online restore.The Groupware and Collaboration Modules are licensed as a base module license and a user based license. 6.) Remote Device and Remote Device Server (Data Mover)

The Remote Device (RD) functionality allows the backup directly from a client to a device directly attached (disk or tape) to this client. Backup is directly executed at the client and the data has not to be transfered via the network. This module enables the use of existing hardware in distributed and wide spread environments. A backup concept can be designed which allows a central management of all backup and restore activities with distributed stored data.

The Remote Device Server (RDS) module enhances the idea of a separate management and storage of the backup data. The data transfer is managed by the Remote Backup Server (the Remote Device Server). Only the control and protocol data is transfered between the central SEP sesam Backup Server and the Remote Device Server. Different to the Remote Device – the Remote Device Server can manage not only the backup of his own data, but also the backup of additional backup clients via the Remote Device Server is possible.

This provides an additional opportunity to a centralised management of all backup and restore activities with local stored data in a distributed environment.

Central Backup Server, Remote Device and Remote Device Server can be installed on different Operating systems.

Using Remote Device and Remote Device Server technology in a SAN environment a LANfree Backup Strategy is possible. In this environment the modules SAN Remote Device and SAN Remote Device Server are needed. SAN means in a SEP sesam environment, the backup data remain in the SAN area. Backup to a storage device in the SAN or Backup to a tape library in the SAN. The following picture describes the SEP components and licenses.

An additional Feature in a SAN environment ist the ability to connect drives in a tape library dynamically to the existing SAN Remote Device Server. Further information are available on our website in the SEP SAN Whitepaper.

SEP sesam Bare System Recovery (BSR) is the Disaster Recovery Solution from SEP. In general for each Client attached to a SEP sesam Server a complete recovery is possible. To allow an easy, flexible and fast disaster recovery SEP provides the SEP BSR modules. Using of a virtual Operating system, SEP BSR allows the partitioning of the new hardware and the restore of all data (operating system and user data) without installing the Operating system in advance. SEP Bare System Recovery is available for Linux and Windows systems.

In a windows environment the disaster recovery is reliant to the Hardware. In case of a system crash commonly the hardware changes to setup a new system. By the use of an image based technology, the image of the Windows Operating System can no longer be used and results in an unstable or not running system after the recovery of the Operating System. SEP BSR for Windows Server and Workstations is able to execute a disaster recovery on dissimilar hardware or in a virtual environment. Completely without the use of a Windows CD. Necessary drivers are installed automatically.

A wide range of SEP Service offerings completes the SEP sesam Backup and Recovery Software

SEP Update Service ensures the maintenance and continuousness of all used SEP sesam modules. The upgrade to new versions and new features is provided by the SEP Update Service.

Consulting and Implementation services as well as Training events are offered by SEP and can be used to support the introduction of SEP sesam into a new infrastructure. The different support modules directly from the vendor ensures the needed support within the expected Service Levels.
