Deduplicated data consist of two elements: a pool of data blocks and a catalog that references this pool of data blocks. The catalog knows the original file name and the reference to the data blocks it contains. With recurring storage of an identical file, only one entry will be written in the catalog, which refers to the blocks already stored in the pool. The deduplication solution divides the data blocks within the file much like a template. How Target Deduplication Works

Variable block sizes are the magic word

SEP deduplication technology does not use fixed, but rather variable block sizes. The difference between the technologies only becomes clear when a file is changed. When matching fixed block lengths, all of the blocks that come after the modified file position in the file must be stored again because the template pattern no longer matches. In the case of variable block sizes, the block will be changed in terms of its length at the modified file position until the template matches the rest of the file again. The software analyzes this by using an algorithm. Thus, only a few changed blocks need to be stored in the pool. Furthermore, SEP sesam Si3 deduplicates based on DedupStores. Identical data blocks from all backup sources that are stored in a DedupStore only exist once. This results in backup storage savings of up to 90%.

How source-side deduplication works

With source-side deduplication, the focus is on the efficiency of transmitting the backups via the network. The data is backed up faster and the network load is reduced quite considerably.

Source-side deduplication is used to protect distributed locations and to increase efficiency in data centers. Each SEP sesam backup client (starting with version 4.4.3) contains a deduplication engine. SEP sesam Si3 Source-Side Dedup helps to significantly increase backup speeds in/from clouds, remote locations, and data centers while conserving backup storage and network resources.

SEP Si3 Source-Side Deduplication can be used hardware-independently and thus increases the flexibility of using the solution. Moving the backups to a remote location or into the cloud provides a high level of additional security. The backup storage is then used more efficiently. No duplicates are kept stored in the Si3 DedupStore anymore. Network traffic savings of up to 90% helps you to avoid having to invest in expensive bandwidth extensions in order to connect with remote locations.

SEP Si3 Replication

Deduplication is not only used to save storage hardware during backups. It also provides the basis for replicating backed-up data in distributed data centers in a way that conserves bandwidth.
